I can see what you mean by making the blinds look like food. I always felt most guys don't do a good enough job making their blinds white, therefore the geese get more used to dark rectangles in danger situations.

Chris
Another well written article. Certainly hiding layouts in most cases is a great benefit. I have to strongly disagree with you though about the layouts in snow. I have learned not to think like a human in most situations when hunting waterfowl.
Humans think, "It is white outside today with all the snow on the ground. Our blinds have to be white." There you go again thinking like a human. As you know, the three most important things when hunting any game is Food, Food, and more Food.
Leave your blinds camo in snow. You want them to stand out and look more like a great grazing opportunity for waterfowl. Food, Food, & more Food.
This comment would be good "Food for thought." Have a great day.

Hi Chris
A very well written article. Good job. I would like to say that hunting of greater Snow Geese on the East coast is a little different because in determining what and how many decoys to use, the weather factor always applies. Answering questions such as
1. Is the ground frozen?
2. Is it snowing or raining?
3. Is the wind blowing?
4. Are my clients for the day in good or poor physical condition?
Because of all those factors, I bring many types of goose decoys to the field. My clients have payed good money to hunt that day and I have to be ready for all cituations and conditions.
Socks and rags on windy days, shells on days that the ground is frozen solid, stuffed birds in tight spots, and so on.
Once again, good article.

Hunting never really interested me until this great guy I know told me all about duck hunting and I want in. I'm looking for advice as far as where to start. I guess you could say my only real experience with anything related to the sport is training dogs...but not to hunt.

Any advice as far as where to go to get started? What do I need to buy? What do you think the total cost to get started would be? And finally do you think I'd still be able to train my 15 month old dog to hunt? I heard that really depends on whether or not he's gun shy? Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you have any resources on teaching kids how to duck hunt? I have a 12 year old wanting to teach his dog how to hunt, but I am having a difficult time finding a group to teach him. THanks.

I've found in the type of hunting I do (mostly small sloughs) I have a much greater kill ratio with 1300 fps shot, reguardless of size. Perhaps it is the closer ranges I'm shooting at. Also, I recently watched a History Channel series on Special Forces Snipers who agreed that a slower bullet does more damage than a fast one, thus they try to match the range with the proper muzzle velocity of their rounds. If this phenom translates over to shell shot, it would reinforce my experience. Just the same, I have made very clean kills @ 70 yards using #4 - 1300 fps on teal. Enjoyed your article.
