Pointing Labs?

Just wondering if anyone owns or has seen pointing labs. Is this behavior unusual, or is it just how the dog was trained. If I got a pup and it hunted with a pointing dog could it learn to do this? A friend of my hunted over one recently and it sounded really cool. What a great waterfowl and upland dog this would be!!

i own one .. yes it is great ...no not all labs will do this it is in there blood ... you can get most labs to flush but not lock down on them... took mine and my bro's to hunting phestent this weekend let the dogs out and were loading the guns when about 30 yards from the truck my girl locked up on a roster took us about 2 or 3 mins to get up to her readdy with shells in the guns she never showed any sign of wanting to break .... only down side they are a lil pricey ... at least 2 or 3 times as much a normal labs ...(at least all the breeders i could find) but if you think about it ... one less dog to train, feed, and buy .... good investment i would say and there is nothing better than walking into a feild to set up goose deks for an afternoon hunt and have your dog lock down on a covey of quail ... gives you a lil mixed bag of birds.... but they don't tend to cover the territory that a normal bird dog will but we had a 7 person line and both dogs were running the whole line most of the time...and they tend to be more obedent... my dog has never hunted with hunted with an e-collar in the feild (hunted all weekend has her bust one cock out of range)

Do pointing labs look more like a trial dog? I haven't really seen a big blocky headed pointing lab yet. just curious.

A tip for guys who don't have pointing labs but still hunt with thier labs in the field. Train your dog to either stop on command or remote sit. When he gets birdy, if your not ready for the bird, give the command or hit the whistle to stop him. When you are ready, release him. Works almost as good as pointing labs, except you have to know when they get birdy.....
