I have a 14 month old lab-the last two days when i have got home from work i've noticed an excessive amount of gunk built up by her eye. When i started to look at it, the out side is all blood shot and fuzzy. It's watering quite a bit which i assume is a good thing. I was gonna give it another day or two and if it doesn't get better take her to the vet. I don't know if grass or a stick scratched it-anyway looking to see if anyone had ideas as to how severe a problem it could be or what could help it heel.

thanks appreciate all ideas.

If it has been a couple days already it is probably not something that is going to work itself out of the dogs eye. If the dog will let you open its eye up and check it out go ahead and do it.

My guess though (without seeing the dog) is that it has conjunctivitis (sp?). All this is, is pink eye. The vet will give you some anti biotic eye drops and it'll clear up. Went through this with my female.

My lab has this problem off and on with one eye. When I went to the vet they told me that one eye has a little skin over growth around the edge and sometimes it will get in the dogs eye and cause it to get blood shot and have gunk all around the eye. What he told me to do is take a wet rag and wipe all the gunk off and put a little water in the dogs eye (easier said then done!!!) and then the dog will rub its eyes with its paws and eventually work it out. Sounds weird and ridiculous but it worked and still does when this occurs. The other option was to have the excess skin removed via surgery. Hope this helps.
