Raining here today so I'm locked down from doing any work. Figured I'd sit down and do a quickie paint job on a bird to pass the time. Haven't been carving or painting much for a while now so it felt good to at least get my hands dirty.

Had a glowing review from my daughter. She said "It's not your best work.". Then when my wife told her she could have phrased that a little differently she said " I've seen you do better.".

Can't say that I disagree alot  ....it'll hunt though.

This pic shows how nice and unsymmetrical I can paint :lol3: :lol3:

Thanks Gene. It's been a while since I've done anything so it really felt good to knock the rust off a little.

I just noticed the blue is painted too far back on the wing. The birds won't care but it's bothering me now

There's something wrong with the bill. Shape? Angle? Something....

The bird doesn't clearly say "Cinnamon Teal". For instance: if it were painted all black, would you still recognize it as a Cinnamon?
Nothing wrong with your simple painting style, nothing at all. But the shapes/proportions can be improved.

Try a Goden pattern next time and see if it doesn't help.

The bill is WAAYY off. Admittedly was in a hurry and rushed the carving on the head so I didn't pick up the mistake. Already been corrected on the new pattern along with about 3 other things a couple of carvers pointed out to me.

Godin patterns are a good starting point....but that's about as far as they go for gunning birds. The problem with the bills in Vol 1-3 are pretty common knowledge.

I ordered a study bill and that made all the difference in the world and resorted back to my taxidermy bird. Forgot I had it...would have saved me some work

The pattern was pulled from a side profile photograph. Thought the proportions were pretty close. The short bill may be throwing it off a little. On top of the shape being off I carved it too short for a cinn.

Thanks for the critique. Always welcomed. Other guys can always see things the carver doesn't for some reason.
