i was out today to hunt and i saw a duck that looked like a coot but wasn't it didn't have webbed feet and it had red and yellow on it's beak i would like info on this bird please
they are in the same boat as mudhens, 25 a day. As for taste I don't think i would ever tryone. I haven't had mudhen either so try it next season if you would like. Let me know how it tastes.
Ask someone who has eaten mudhen, they will tell you to pass on it i'm sure.
I've never eaten a coot but your crazy. Just kidding, but not really. I haven't ventured past my dads recomendations on eating duck. I didn't shoot anything he told me tasted bad, knowing he would make me eat it.
It is not bad, just like venison "It is how you cook it". Javelina?? Bear??
Heck people still eat "scrapple" where I came from. Side note, is there any open duck clubs?
Yep, that's a moorhen, coot's first cousin. They are a little different eatingwise - coots are dark meat like ducks, moorhens are lighter like pheasants. These guys are very secretive and will flush on you like a grouse or pheasant. Coots will try to swim away first then flush by skittering on the water.
Either way, eat 'em up - but you MUST skin them and remove the fat. Unlike ducks, coot/moorhen skin & fat tastes AWFUL. Meat is like venison. Servie it medium-rare.
