A buddy of mine invited me to go hunting this morning near Hartford AR. I hadn't been since the season opener in Texas Labor Day weekend, and my dog was getting a little stir crazy from being stuck in my duplex with me all week as I had to miss work on account of being sick. I was warned not to get my hopes up this was going to be nothing like the central Texas dove hunts I grew up with where filling a limit of 15 is a commonplace. So we drove out before sunrise in the first truly cool morning of the year dog and guns in tow. We pulled up to a hay pasture that had been recently bailed and set up near a power line in the pasture each of us beside our own hay bail, about 15 minutes after legal light a group of 5 flies past. So my expectations were already exceeded. We wound up with six birds between the two of us. Not a bad day for this area. If I had shot well we probably would have come home with four more, but that is life and we aren't all pro shooters. I enjoyed being out in the cool morning and always enjoy watching my dog work like me he's not a pro but he's a great bird dog and an even better companion for my wife and I. I love the hunt and the time with a gun in my hands. I even enjoy the whining ridicule from my dog when I miss birds he thinks I should have shot for him. All in all a good morning.
