NEW BOATER LAW IN IOWA

New Iowa law requires a bit more from boaters

Starting July first it is illegal to transport aquatic plants on boats. That
means before a boater leaves the water, they will have to drain all the water
from the boat. They'll also have to clean any plants, animals or mud from the
boat, and before entering a new body of water, the boat has to be sprayed with
hot water or dried for five or more days.

It's all part of an effort to prevent introducing new species into foreign
bodies of water.

"We want to make sure that we're at least managing the aquatic invasive species
that are in Iowa and throughout the nation," says Susan Stocker with the Iowa
Department of Natural Resources.

To help boaters learn the rules, Iowa DNR workers will be doing inspections at
boat ramps.
