Wed . a.m. My buddy Mike and I headed out scouting for geese . We threw in a few bags of decoys and our guns , just in case an opportunity presented itself to hunt. It was approaching mid-morning and we were getting apprehensive as to where the geese were hiding since we hadn`t seen any since we left town . We finally spotted a small group and decided to follow them in hopes they might show us the way. We had followed for only a short distance when the birds cupped up and fell out of the sky . The birds were hidden from our site so we circled the section to see if we could pick them up from a better vantage point. We were able to get in position on the other side of the section to glass a fairly good size lake (35 acres ) . As we looked thru the binoculars you could almost hear our hearts beat as our blood pressure rose . The lake was literally covered with waterfowl . We could see the splashing and the flutter of huge numbers of ducks and hundreds of geese . As we sat there transfixed by spectacle before us flights of both ducks and geese were still dropping in. I told Mike I don`t care if they do laugh at me I am going to ask to hunt. We had no trouble finding the property owner and went to the door to ask about permission to hunt . The lady that answered the door told me I would have to talk with her husband " Herb" who was out in the shop working on her car . What a surprise we found in the shop. Herb was there changing the oil on what appeared to be a showroom perfect 1955 Chevy Bel Air . Our hunting adventure was temporarily forgotten as deja vu set in . The 55 thru 57 Chevys were called the shoebox series . Classic American Icons. I had owned and raced well over a dozen of the 55 /57 chevys and drove a 57 convertible to high school my senior year . To see such a pristine example of mid fifties automotive art dredged up a lot of memories . Herb was very gracious and pleased im sure at our admiring appraisial of his handiwork. He told us the story of the car and how his wife`s father was a car salesman at the local dealer in town . This car was his demo that he drove . He finally sold it to a local contractor for $ 2,600. The car had been lost till it was discovered 2 yrs ago . Herb bought it and started the amazing restoration .Herb obviously knows his stuff as he preformed a frame off total restoration. Herb and I talked about classic styling of the fifties models and cars we had both owned and wish we still owned . I asked Herb if he minded if I took a few pictures and he didn`t mind at all and pulled the little chevy outside where I could get the entire car in the frame . I tried to get a pic of just Herb and his car but he wouldn`t go for it so I was able to convince him to do a pic with us both in the shot . The conversation finally got around to our reason for being there and I asked Herb if he minded if we hunted some geese on his property. My heart skipped a beat when he said heck no I`ll show you around if you want . It turns out Herb has quite a layout ,well over 2,000 acres with one large lake and two smaller ones . Herb says he has more turkeys on his place than a hound has fleas, and we were welcome to hunt there anytime . Needless to say Herb is my new BFF.
The Hunt; We set up in the cut corn adjacent to the lake . The ducks a geese swirled around not wanting to leave the lake. We figured they would start coming back soon and we were half right as the ducks came back in force and worked the goose decoys just daring us to shoot them . We had a lot of fun calling back at them as they circled the hens talking up a storm . We stayed the remainder of the day and didn`t start picking up till shooting time . That was incidentally the same time the geese started piling back into the lake . Although we never fired a shot that day it was a very productive outing as we came away with a new place to hunt and a new friend in Herb. I`m sure you guys know where I will be on the 21st.

John...we're waiting! How was it?
Well, Charlie I wish I had a good story for you but I don`t . My initial plan was to hunt Herb`s lake Sat . but Mike and I got an invitation to hunt a private marsh (flooded corn ) for the re-opener . I hated to pass on Herb`s place but this marsh looked like a sure thing . We even scouted this place late Fri, afternoon and it was covered with ducks . There were also thousands of ducks on the public marsh`s in the surrounding area . Again I learned the lesson that there are no sure things in waterfowl hunting. Sat.a.m. came in cold and cloudy and locked down the birds . I should have gone to Herb`s.
