Kind of new to waterfowl hunting have hunted for deer all my life. The question I've got is I have two 12 kayaks and plan to hunt the Kansas river this coming 2014 duck season. If there is anyone with information as to where I can hunt and put in etc that would be awesome not asking you to share your spots just have never done it I live off 435 and holiday drive in kcks and would like to put in somewhere around Desoto and or Eudora if anyone can help me out here it would mean the world to me I like to take my teenage son with me so this would be awesome thanks for any information
Getting on the KS river during icy conditions and floating downstream is a bad idea. The river is unpredictable and you never know when you might hit a stretch that is completely iced up and you'll be stuck.
I'd rather be hit in the nuts with a sledgehammer than go on the KS river in a kayack during the winter. You will become another KS statistic if you do that.
Save us all another post on "KS duck hunter drowns" and sell those kayacks and buy a jon boat or some other more seaworthy watercraft for hunting the river in the winter time.
Both Desoto and Eudora have good public ramps for launching and I have done the Eudora to Edwardsville run more than a couple of times . My buddy Mark from Desoto has several Kayaks and him and his brothers kayaked on the Kaw regularly . Life jackets were the rule and and getting upset in the river was not an unusual occurrence, but their river running always took place during the summer . Getting dumped in mid winter carries a high probability for disaster. The previous posts have given some good advice and I have only a single request of you . Please don`t take your son out on that river in a kayak in the dead of winter . I`m afraid if he got in trouble we could lose you both . Good luck ,good hunting but above all stay safe .
I've float hunted the Kansas in an Otter Stealth 1200 and didn't feel like I was doing anything dangerous. Two of us would hunt with one guy paddling and the other in front shooting. You need two trucks anyway to get back to where you launched the boat. Definitely need to be aware of the river conditions such as ice jams or you could be in for a long walk. Some boat ramps aren't very useable during the winter...Cedar Creek and Eudora both tend to freeze up early.

I was motoring down the Kansas river by myself going to a spot that I had seen some geese earlier in the week. I was almost there when I found the river blocked with ice. The ice jam was only a 100 yards or so wide and the ice looked rotten. I bulled through and almost made it...I ended up with the boat sitting on solid ice about 30 yards from the open water. I knew that there was only one way off the ice...get out and push the boat back the way I had come. The ice was really solid where I was stuck, but it wasn't that way everywhere. I got out and made sure that I had a good hold on the boat and tried to keep most of my weight on the boat. Sure enough I was able to shift the boat back off the ice but it was slow and hard. Suddenly, the ice I was standing on gave way and I found myself hanging off the side of the boat in deep water. I won't say that I thought I was going to die, but I damn sure knew I was in trouble. I tried to pull myself up into the boat but I'm too old and fat and out of shape. I saw that the stern of the boat was still on solid ice so I pulled myself toward the ice and was able to get my weight onto the ice and climb back in the boat. Once I was back inside I just sat there for a long time letting the adrenaline level come back down to normal before I started the engine and made it back out to open water.

radfordc (aka) Charlie ; This was your post from the thread "Scary Hunts" . Now just imagine instead of an experienced hunter and knowledgeable river-man dealing with a situation like that it was a inexperienced teenager in a kayak . It is a recipe for disaster.
John, you are right. What I should have said is that even in a safer boat than a kayak the river still demands a high degree of caution. If you make a mistake you can be in trouble very quickly.
Thanks guys not sure about the kayaks on the river after your reviews are there places along the river where you can hike in and hunt and maybe use waders
