Anyone ever seen it in sea ducks? I thought it was just a puddler thing, until I opened up an eider yesterday with full blown rice breast.

Funny you say that... A little soy sauce and Ruger didn't know the difference either. I'll eat a sea duck... But a sea duck with rice breast... No thanks. I read something today that said that it definitely needs to be cooked before eaten, for dogs and humans. Just something to keep in mind for those feeding rice breast to the dog.

i have been told in the past that sea ducks do have high mercury levels but i cant cite any specific sources.

i really hope you cooked it before giving it to ruger because yeah, im pretty sure dogs can get it. cooking kils the parasite so im sure youre alright, but i think i would have tossed it.

Man, mergansers can't buy a break (see link)... But, this study from 2006 showed that while there is detectable mercury and pesticides in geese and seaducks, and moreso in the East, the levels were low enough for Health Canada to declare them safe.

So, it's probably like GBT. They probably do have enough contaminants that if you eat a ton, you might have a slightly higher exposure (but maybe not an unsafe one, anyway), but not enough for me to pass on sashimi or bacon-wrapped-jalepeno-grilled-duck!

YMMV

Yeah I cooked it Leakey. He wouldn't eat much of it anyways. Looked at me like "you expect me to keep eating this!?".

In terms of other mass ducks with it, I've shot a black and a mallard with it in the past couple years. Those were tossed.

I think it is funny this topic was brought up in the last week as today I got my first rice breast bird. I shot a big drake mallard today, by looks of it a mature bird. I was really excited to eat it because of its size but upon cutting it open, this is what I found.

I feel bad doing it but I can't bring myself to eat it.

Bummer. I'd have trouble eating that, too (agree that it's somehow way worse than cod or dolphin worms...).

i just couldnt do it, either. just plain nasty looking.

from what i read, you normally see it in older birds, although it may still be present in the younger ones, just that theyre not showing the symptoms yet. ignorance is bliss.
A good buddy of mine did some "work" in some mountainous areas of the less developed world. He always said there are two kinds of people, those that have worms and those that don't know they have worms.

Shudder….

i hear what youre saying...what you see with rice breast is not the parasite, though. they are cysts. equally unappetizing. barf.

as for the cod worms, i just pick em out and they dont bother me. i have even seen them in the smelt that i catch. when i shot my mallard with rice breast, i tried to pick them all out. i went through it thoroughly and found the cysts all through the breast and thigh meat. all over. ended up tossing it. hated doing it.

makes me wonder every time i whole roast a bird or breast it out leaving the skin on.
