Guys, I'm booking a trip to Disney next January and am wondering who has been? Any pointers or tips?

About ten years ago my wife graduated form nursing school. I told her I'd take her on a vacation as a gift. Anywhere, New Orleans, Las Vegas, New York, anywhere she wanted to go. She comes up with Disney. She'd never been as a kid. Off to Disney we go.

Spent four days there going to the parks. We stayed in one of the New Orleans themed hotels, had fun. On the last day, she went to a massage, I went bass fishing. They had guided half day trips on the lakes. Nothing big, but plenty of fish.

By the time you leave there you're going to want to find Walt Disney, dig his arse up, and ask "Jesus Walt what the fry were you thinking when you made this place?!?"

Is your duck season over when you're booking the trip?
No, but it's supposed to be the least crowded week of the year and I've never been. Plus, my aunt and uncle are taking their kids that week so me n the little one are tagging along.

I've heard you either feel that way or LOVE it. I imagine with a 6 year old I'll have to love it.

Seeing her happy will likely make it tolerable.

It is a life changing experience. You will realize life is too short for such places. Your kids will enjoy playing in the swimming pool at the motel more than anything else. You are the foreigner at the theme parks. Food is expensive, service sucks, and the kids will get tired and fuss as much as the wife. Of course that was 15 years ago so it probably got better.

I know it will, she's already talking about breakfast with the princesses and getting made up like a princess.

We go with the WHOLE FAMILY (8 kids 8 adults) almost every 3 years or so. I love that place. So many things you can do there. The one piece of advise I would give to anyone going to the Disney area... Bring LOTS of money. It is expensive. I would recommend the water parks for sure (Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, Wet N Wild...etc.) Disney World is a must. Do a LOT of research. There are so many places that you can go. A lot of times you will find deals if you bundle multiple tickets for different parks, (Disney, Blizzard Beach, Epcot...whatever.) Downtown Disney is a blast for the adults. Epcot is better at night, as they light up the big ball thingy. Disney World is the one park we will go in the morning, go back to the hotel, take a nap and then go back at night. It's like two different parks depending on what time of the day you go.

This is where I ask where I return my man card for knowing this much about a kids park.

I better go drink some whiskey, eat some duck and scratch my b@ll$ to make sure they still exist. :fingerhead:

Good luck on your trip.

Remember... Lots of money/Do a lot of research.

we went in feb of this year. Me, my better half, and all 5-kids. Stayed a week at the animal kingdom lodge. We had a blast. Stay inside the park, i have stayed inside and outside. Staying inside the park makes it so much easier and enjoyable. You also get some extra time in the parks after they are closed to guest staying outside. Do you homework on the offerings of each park and use the fast pass system. Get there early and stay late! There is a app for you smart phone that has all the wait times for each ride, listed per park. Get the app for sure. Also, get the meal plans. We had food left over on plans after we were done, it may not seem like you will save money but you do.

We stayed just outside the park (hotel offered free shuttle) and bought food outside to bring in every day (saved a ton that way). Take your own water, fountains are few and far between and the water taste terrible, bottled water in the park is something like 5bucks. Double check your dates, I know they run a marathon there around then; we went right after school started and it was not busy at all. When you start in the morning go clear to the back and work forward, we never had or needed a fast pass this way.

Disney World is Different than Disney Land. Been to both, and Disney Land a lot (my mom grew up down the road). +1 on take lots of money. Everything is more expensive than you wold believe. However, I have never seen my kids more happy. I have five daughters and we went the whole day without a single cross word. They were in heaven, and that put me in heaven.

Fast Pass is your friend. Learn how to use it so that you don't spend all day in line. Don't go out to the car to eat like my cheapskate of a dad. If you have little kids, bring some crackers and water bottles, and some other snakes, the gate has always let us come in with them. They were much more pickey when it was just my wife and I. Theme park food is theme park food. Eat well the day before, and the day after.

Do not feel obligated to hit every ride, but do spend time in one area before moving to another. The parks are big, and you can burn all day walking around if you are not careful. Also, for the family, make a rule that each person gets One (1) souvenir, tell them they can't buy it until the afternoon and don't let them get something supper cruddy that will break before they get to the car.

My favorite time of the year to go is the first part of December before the Christmas school break but after they put up the Christmas decorations. Disney Christmas is really cool. January should be decent with small crowds too.

If you are buying a multi-day pass, splurge and get the "magic-morning." It lets you in the park an hour or so early. We did that when I was a young teenager and it was the best hour of my Disney experience. We hit Space Mountain four times in a one hour block. No lines. It was awesome.

Make a generous budget, do what you have to do so that you don't think about money while your there (because you did before you got there). You will have a much better time.

Do not be afraid to sit down and take a break. If you go go go, you wont enjoy yourself.

Whew. I didn't know I would write this much.

Have fun.

Have a lot of fun.

Really, have a whole lot of fun.

This. x2 on Fast pass. Will really make the day better and save time on your line waits. Christmas at Disney is amazing. THe lights and firework shows are awesome. You can go to any park really and see a firework show. Magic Kingdom does the best and they have schedules for them all. Your daughter will enjoy it because they have "tink" on a zip line and she shoots through the sky. The resort themed hotels are great places to stay. I was fond of Key West resort myself, but Saratoga Springs, New Orleans, Wilderness Lodge, and the Boardwalk are all great places.
