Who butchers their own deer? I shot a 6 point Sunday and finished putting it in the freezer this morning. I really, really need an electric grinder. Every year I swear I'm going to buy one, but I'm super cheap and very stubborn. At any rate, the freezer is full so I can go back to staring at empty skies in the hopes of seeing ducks.

If anyone has had good experiences with affordable electric grinders, post up some info. Thanks!

Biggers better in the grinder world especially if you are doing more than 2 or 3 deer a year. I have a 1hp commercial grade and love the thing.

I have a small cheap one and it gets the job done, but I wish I had a much bigger one. Just making hamburg is not too bad, but if I want to then stuff some sausage (that just sounds wrong  ), it takes too long.

Error on getting more than you think you need. I wish I had.

Mine is the cheapest one from Gander Mountain that cost about $100. I've put a lot of miles on it and it still does the job, but as steelshotslayer said, bigger is better in the grinder world. That's my only complaint.

By the way, we = my wife. I clean the deer and she processes them.
That's cool. My wife does not help process them at all

Although, she will handle the sausage when I'm stuffing it. :lol3:

That's actually true. Just no cutting and grinding.

She's a city girl. The first time I brought a deer home and butchered it, I think she had the vision of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in her head. She went out and looked in the garage when I was done and I think she was shocked it was not a mess

I get some help from the gf, but it isn't her favorite thing to do by any means. I'm not complaining though, any help is better than none. I have never used any vacuum seal products, have always just wrapped in butcher paper and taped shut. It goes pretty quick, so never had an issue with freezer burn. Maybe if I buy a decent grinder that speeds up the process, I'll think about getting one and shooting more deer.

I'm super jealous of the 1hp grinder, sounds like the kind of toy I need. Though the $150 one is probably more up my alley.

Go big with grinders... Lots of power if you can. Vacuum sealing is the way to go, I vac most of my meat, you'll remove remove risk of freezer burn, defrosting is clean an wont bleed out in your fridge, hell you can even "wet" age... Although I call bullsh@t on wet aging but will keep meat from spoiling for a month or longer in the fridge...if its done right

Yea it comes in handy but when your doing 15+ deer a year. Me and my wife only eat venison so we normally do 5 for us. Then my father and step mother usually takes 4 or 5. Along with my younger brother who normally take 5 or so it comes in handy when making 60 lbs of sausage or grinding 70 lbs of ground.

Kitchen aids work, but they can get gummed up if you don't take off all the silver skin. The harder you push your grinder the warmer the grind... And ya don't want your fat melting, more power equals a quicker/cooler grind.

And we all want a cool grind

We have a Kitchen Aid mixer with the grinder attachment. Works pretty well, plus I got the sausage stuffer attachment. I dont know how it compares power wise to other grinders
For a guy wanting to grind goose, would you recommend the kitchen aid over a stand alone? I have a stand mixer and just started talking to my girlfriend about buying a grinder attachment for it. I want to start grinding geese into sausage but dont have any way to do it right now.

Stand alone over kitchen aid every time. I use an LEM, have done a couple deer, elk and a couple hundred birds every year.
For the same money, could I get a stand alone that would be comparable quality to what I would get with the kitchen aid? I dont deer hunt, and grinding goose breasts is the only thing I could possibly think I would use this for.

I bought a Vac sealer years ago and realized it was way to expensive to do whole deer we use our on precious meat Like the few quail breast we have a year or walleye fillets, Meat wrapped in( Press and seal) and wax freezer paper will last well beyond our demand for meat so the Vac sealer VERY SELDOM gets used. reusing bags with raw meat wasn't in my game plan either...

We usually process 3-4 deer a year for my household, my in laws and my parents we also help at times cut wrap and freeze their venison and ducks and goose...

Love I can open my freezer and 9-10 months out of the year its fresh garden veggies and WILD MEAT Very seldom do we buy meat or eat store bought canned veggies

Sounds like a lot of folks enjoy the LEM models, so that's going on the wish list. Never thought abound making goose sausage, but may have to try that someday. Happy thanksgiving all.

Hey T-Man, I have what I think is a Kitchen Aid grinder and stuffer set up. I don't have a mixer so I have no use for it. PM me if you want to discuss it. I'm thinking you could get it pretty cheap.

Our extended family has an LEM that is community property. It's like 2 horse power. We also have a 5# sausage stuffer.

I make a lot of hot italian sausage with my geese. Very good.
Sounds like I may have a grinder found. Mind PM'ing me your recipe?
