Well look up your states hunting regulations to be sure. In NY it is this:

# Youth Days are additional days for Junior Hunters only. Young hunters, 12 to 15 years of age, possessing a junior hunting license may hunt ducks, coots, mergansers and Canada geese on 2 special days in each zone. Daily bag limits for ducks are the maximum allowed during the regular duck season, and 2 per day for Canada geese. Young hunters must be accompanied by a licensed (including current HIP registration and duck stamp) adult hunter, but the adult may not shoot any birds. Note: A 2003-04 hunting license is needed to hunt on any Youth Day in September.

If it is the same as the heritage hunt day here in N.S. then it is a day set aside for a licensed hunter to introduce a youngster, or two, who has his/her firearms and hunter safety courses to the sport of duck hunting. The adult or person of the age of majority is not allowed to carry a gun or to paticipate in the hunt other than as a mentor and guide. This day is usally a week or two before the season opener.

Keep the sport alive take a kid hunting/fishing.

WHY, Are these states setting the Youth Waterfowl season up at the end of the seasons?

They should set the Youth hunt to be Before All of Us Adults get to shooting at the Waterfowl!

Here in PA, we have our resident Goose season start the Beginning of september. Normally the youth hunt comes in after the Resident Goose season goes out and before our Early Duck season.
This past year, the youth Hunt was on the Last Day of our resident Goose season, Sept. 25. Gave the Kids a chance to Bag Geese along with Ducks!
Before, they were limited to just Ducks on the Youth Day!

Why are you guys not pushing for the youth to have their Special Day before all others?
I know from hunting in the South, you guys tend to only have Teal and Woodies in your early seasons, why not set it up for then and KEEP Taking them kids out all thru the season?

I, Personally would rather have the Kids season set Before the Regular Seasons! Give them a chance to bag birds that have not been Educated all season from the Sky Busting and Over Calling!

Woody I know, there have been a lot of us that have tried and basically you cant ever get a straight answer from no one. Their minds are set that the ducks are not here in the first part of the season, its just one more obvious reason that are season is all wrong as well. The season went out today and I promise you I will be hunting geese come Feb. 20th or so and the ducks will be more productive than the start.

I like that it is after season. Down here there a many more ducks after season than during the season. Plus, they get a chance to rest for a week and not be pressured by hunters. I think that by having the youth hunt after season, it gives kids a better chance to harvest more birds than if it were at the beginning of the season where the duck numbers are fairly low.
