First try at sea ducks

We took the boat that's consumed the last few months of our free time out for its first sea duck hunt (our first solo and third overall thanks to Jay and Mush).

The weather started nice and the seas picked up later in the morning. Birds were moving on and off all morning which was nice. Not a lot if plumed drakes if any species. More drake white wings than any other but they stayed right outside. Must have not liked something. Other flocks including came right in and we picked up a bunch.

The three eiders to the left are drakes, just not plumed yet. Same with the merg which was half way there. Then surf scoter drake was the duck of the day! We lost another Drake that dove from the same flock.

First ever eiders and first drake surf scoter ever.

Wish my shooting was better but can't complain overall! Certainly looking forward to seeing some nicely plumed drakes and my ultimate goal of a drakes only day...love the way drake sea ducks look.

Good shoot! I have a drake old squaw in the freezer to go to the taxidermist. Sea ducks don't taste the best, but I found if you marinate them over night in McCormicks grill mates (tomato, basil, garlic) then deep fry in seasoned flower, they taste pretty dang good!

Thanks! Yeah they don't normally taste great but a good marinade works for me...thanks for the tip I'll have to try it! These eiders didn't have much of a smell when I was cleaning them, at least compared to scoters and mergs I've cleaned in the past.
