We had an early start this morning and rode out along the ICW to one of my favorite spots. Along for the day was my longtime hunting partner Chick and another good friend Alex. It was very hazy/foggy as we rode out but the weather cleared around 4 AM and it looked like it was going to be a bright and sunny morning, but alas, the cloud cover thickened and we had great conditions at dawn. The teal were flying well and we loaded up on them, Chickie dropped 4 stone dead with one shot and one drake was banded. It was his first banded duck of his waterfowling career, and he and I have killed some ducks in our time. He then went on another first by dropping a hen shoveller. We became a little more selective as the day proceeded, passing on the zillions of teal that kept buzzing us. Temptation overcame me at on point on what I thought was another teal zipping from right to left through the decoys and I dropped it with one shot. Jack brought back a fat little Ruddy Duck...oh well.

Not many big puddlers were flying compared to all those darting teal, but we had 4 hen pintails land in the decoys, and we shot 2 blackies and Chick and I rounded out our limit on a pair of Widgeon, I got the drke while Chick took down the hen. 18 birds before 9:30! Not bad for an opening day. 2 Black Ducks, 3 Widgeon, 1 Shoveller, 1 Ruddy, & 11 GW Teal
