hey im new here. i live in long valley and mostly hunt down south. for the opener i was thinkin of tryin black river. is it good? how are the crowds? oh yea and if yall could give me some heads up on your location so i dont invade on you that would be great :smile:
I will be out on some private land in Morris County.
Luckily my friend "knows a guy" so we got permission.I am hoping there isn't any one else on the same lake. We are not the only ones with lake access.
Hi;
I'm up on Schooley's mt.. Black river is full of sky busters! It gets crowded so you better get in there early & stake out your spot. There's isn't to much water in there this year. So you better try & get to the main channel with the rest of the canoes. After 1 st day the birds get out of there at or before 1st light from all the pressure on the roost. So hunts there are short. I hunt there after freeze up when the spring holes are open.
Good luck & be SAFE
i am going to try there for the opening day. i have a canoe and scouted there last weekend. i didnt see any birds. to warm! but i found a pothole and am going to try it. i will take your advise and get there early. thanks
i noticed that you guys hunt from canoes, i always wanted to try it but i thought that the blast from the gun would upset the boat easyly and you would capsize.
what kind of canoe are you using? i dont think mine is stable enough to shoot from.
I hunt out of a TDB or marsh boat. Fall & winter winds make canoes dangerous IMO unless you find a real sheltered spot. I seen dumb a$$es out in canoes & little jon boats with 1 1/2 chop. Waterfowl hunting in cold weather on water is dangerous enough without takeing chances
I'm new to ducks on the Black River myself (I have hunted pheasants up on the north side of the WMA for a while), but will try on Saturday morning. Good luck to all.
Waterfowl10 - I was going to put in by the bridge near the monestary (Furnace Road, turn left toward river, over bridge and into parking area). I imagine this will be crowded, but a bad day on the river listening for ducks is better than most days. I'm happy to meet up if you want to try to rookie it together. I've got my canoe, no dog, and a few woodie/mallard dekes (although I probably will only put out four or five -- very narrow channels).
I jump hunted the flooded timber twice last year with minimal results. I scouted there twice in the summer, there seemed to be plenty of water. I plan to float hunt after work (I work in Parsippany now) every once in a while once things quiet down and the migrating birds move in. I used a canoe in the past, but it was a pain in the but to handle alone. I'm using a borrowed Aquapod thi syear and a LOVE it! Highly recommend it...
Good luck! :biggrin:
