The weather men have been horrendous lately and today was no exception.
It was supposed to be cold and windy...
I got off the dock on a falling tide at 9am looking for brant.
It was a slick and still as it could be....mirror calm.
Yesterday was a zoo with tons of guys out and today there was one other boat as far as I could see....my kind of day.
I scouted around a bit and set up on a point with a sand bar and a deep water channel that ran out for bills, mergs, buffs, whatever...but I really wanted some brant.
There were lots around, so I didn't want to shoot at the passing buffs etc so I hung out until a pair of drake mergansers came in low and dropped one in a 3 bounce splash.
Then a long wait until I heard a buzz.....then a brrrrrr, and I figured cool! A boat to kick things up a bit...the brrrrrrr became a BRRRRR which became a WHAAAAAAAAAAA and I had no freakin idea what the hell was coming down the bay, but I didn't want to look because I figured that some birds HAD to be coming soon...
Finally it got so loud that I had to look and at that second it was a sea plane that went RIGHT over me at 100' high or so...REALLY low and REALLY loud.
Sure enough here come the brant and I dropped 2...done.
Not a breath of wind and nearly no one out.....
strange, but a great day alone.
