I've only been hunting upstate NY for a few seasons and it is extremely different from the salt marshes that I grew up with.
I would say my dream spot is a low spot in the middle of a large corn field that holds water through the season. The only problem I see is that it would not give up a mixed bag of species?
This is only my second year of duck hunting. Simply put is has become on an addiction. I guess my first response would be any place I can get permission. The reason is that I have always been a bow hunter and had permission to hunt places for deer that are not duck spots at all. I really enjoy any place where I can wade in and set up my puppy to work. It is so much fun watching her work and scan the sky for birds. The flooded timber hunts I watch on tv look awesome as the birds drop out of the sky to land.
It wouldn't be my dream spot anymore if I posted it - but I would have to say a flooded corn field. But a nice timber swamp with a bubbler might be better.
Yea I can see the drool already...........Just so you know I'm making up some longtail Dekes as I type. Just taking a break from the sanding. Man that takes a toll on your hands. Brother I got your back on those bad boys...Just bring the heavy artillary and a few stockings for the Drakes...........
Matt, you'll have to post some pics of those blocks when you're done. One tip, if you haven't seen it already. You can use heavy duty black zip ties for the long tail feathers on those drakes. I don't know if the birds will care, but it's a nice touch.
Brother 870..................Took my 14 fter out in the Lake on Sunday. What a beauty of a day.....I think I went out about 6 miles or so. Took my string of Scoter Dekes and layed those bad boys out on a gang rig 70 yrs off the boat. Just drifter along and what do my weary eyes pick up, but a drake oldsquaw making a bee line for the dekes. Not a mounter, but hey its the first season, and I already got one of those tough guys on the water...............Can't wait for the split......We'll have to firm up a date(s) whan we get a little closer..............................
Matt, 6 miles out on Lake Ontario in a 14 footer, no kidding. I was just asking 870 on another thread about taking my 15-1/2 footer out on Ontario. I'll watch the weather and try it someday. I thought about going out on Ontario from Fair Haven on Sunday, but I wasn't sure about the 10 mph SSW that they were calling for (was afraid, with my luck, it would shift a little more to the west). I was thinking I should wait for a light South to Southeast breeze for my first trip. Anyway, on Sunday I went to the Little Island on Cross Lake instead and saw some broadbill, didn't get any shots though.
I have a lot of Lake experience and I keep a watchful eye on that wind. The first incling that it will change....I'm outta there...... The funny thing was I got stopped by the coast guard while I was out there. Good thing I was all legal..................
HEY MATT, someome drifting around, 6 miles out, all in camo on a border with a gun, nothing strange there
