Not going to bother you all with the typical where to go, that is my problem to figure out. This is my first season hunting waterfowl and I can honestly say that I am hooked now with 1 goose and 3 ducks under my belt LOL and probably 1,000 miles on the truck and another dozen in the canoe scouting to show for it. All my knowledge comes from the internet since I don't know or have ever met anyone in my area that duck hunts and given that some forums appear to me to be full of bad advice, but this one seems to be a bit different. I hunt in areas in southern Ohio where I am as likely to encounter geese as I am ducks so I have been running 18 cheapo mallards, 4 on a jerk cord, on one side of the "hole" and 4 goose floaters on the other side and try to consider wind when setting up. From scouting and watching ducks I think I may need more motion to be realistic than the jerk cord provides? I also wonder if I should be putting a few different species in my spread, and if so which ones? Lastly is a calling question, keep in mind this is hill country and I can not see very far. I know enough not to call when they are committed but a lot of times my visibility range is so short I couldn't if I wanted to. Should I just keep quiet and let the decoys do the work or call a lot. Currently I blow a 5-6 note call about every 5-10 minutes in case there is something out of sight but not hearing distance. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
