For me it would be an improved modified, 3 1/2" #2's or BB's out of my 10 gauge. If shooting 12, the same choke and shells but only 3". With that said, I hate long shots and prefer to shoot them up close and smack them in the lips.
INVEST some time and $ and see which combo patterns better. You can go ahead and scratch blind side and black cloud off your list for long distance. Try hevi shot, kent, rio etc.....also the pattern may be there but YOULL STILL CRIP MORE AT 40 than 20 regardless. Just experiment....on paper
You mean greater snow geese. For some reason they don't respond to my calling very well though. If I could only get them about 10 yards closer, they'd be in range.
For me it's an original Patternmaster, 870, #2 steel, and 10,000+ rounds of practice with this exact combo.
Practice is the best thing. But I'd be more concerned with why I'm shooting 40+ yard shots than how to make em effectively. Shooting ducks at 15 yards makes anybody look like Tom Knapp, and it's a lot more fun.
Full Choke.
3.5" shell, 1 7/8 of Bismuth #4's.
It's basically a turkey load that I handload. If I only shoot once with Bismuth, but 3-4 times with Steel, it's cheaper to shoot the shell that costs $2.50.
