Aerial treatments for invasive plants planned on Lake Marion
Santee Cooper will conduct helicopter treatments of EPA-approved aquatic herbicides targeting the invasive aquatic plants water hyacinth and crested floating heart in Lake Marion beginning Sept. 9.The applications should improve lake access for residential and commercial properties, restore recreational opportunities and help prevent the spread of the invasive plants to other areas within the Santee Cooper Lakes system. Treatments will last through Sept. 20.To notify boaters of spray operations, Santee Cooper employees will patrol the spray sites on airboats, post signage and be present at public and commercial boat landings located near the targeted locations. Lake users are asked to avoid the following areas during these operations:Upper Lake Marion (Calhoun County): Water hyacinth - Lowfalls/Halfway Swamp, Stumphole Swamp.Lake Marion (Clarendon County): Water hyacinth - Elliott's Tree Line, Bee Tree Lake, north shoreline from Pack's Landing to Persanti Island, Santee River discharge adjacent to channel markers 174-176.Lake Marion (Clarendon County): Crested floating heart - Santee National Wildlife Refuge, Bluff, Pine Island and Cuddo units.Lake Marion (Berkeley County): Crested floating heart - areas adjacent to Mac's Camp and Big Oak LandingQuestions concerning these operations can be directed to Santee Cooper's analytical and biological services unit at 843-761-4078.
