South Texas Geese

This past weekend my friends and I went on a father-son goose hunt and it was our first time. We went with Avian skies near Port Lavaca and had a blast. We had a "slow" day and killed 20. Needless to say, we are all hooked. I was wondering if there were any other people in South Texas (especially near Corpus Christi) that hunt geese? If so we would really appreciate some advice on how to get started. We are hard working hunters and willing to go the distance, we just need to be pointed in the right direction. Best of luck out there guys!

first things first. you need a place to go. 2 you need decoys but there is two ways to go, lifelike as possible or as much as you can get as cheap as you can get it. and 3 you need to get a decent call and practice what you hear while the geese are on the ground. any specific ?s dont hesitate to ask

check out rogerssportingoods.com they have decent prices on windsock type decoys along with their own brand of fullbody for under a hundred bucks a 6pack. calls i use a sean mann express snow/blue call. and for the where i couldnt tell ya besides ask some of the farmers around your area if they wouldnt mind you goose hunting on their fields.

The best and cheapest way on the decoys is sillosocks hands down. They are the best sock decoy on the market. Me and my partners hunt near Beaumont a lot and kill a lot of geese there. Snows are a true numbers game. Meaning almost always the more the better but there are the once in awhiles where that's not the case.

On the call, Riceland poly is the best on the market!!!!!!!!

windsocks or silosocks work well for putting motion in the spread and ease of carring big numbers. Texas rags that come with the preprinted black wing bars for adding to numbers for snows is less expensive than the silo socks and if you attach them to 1/2 to 1/4 inch dowels about 2 ft long they will also add motion and allow them to be used when there is no grain stubble to drape them on.

It is hard to beat full body decoys. Even if only 2-3 dozen along with a like # of shell decoys on the down wind edge of the spread, ie the birds will see these first. then behind them come the windsocks/silosocks and behind those the rags. most realistic to least realistic.

in the past the area around Rivera, the area southeast of lake CC and the area Sinton-Bayside-Refugio have been successful for geese. The further up the coast you gotowards Houston the more geese there are in general.
