Midday hunting

Before kids I would hunt all day long with work time falling in between 10 AM and 2 PM and had some good shoots while working but this year 10 to 2 is going to be my hunt time . The biggest drawback to it is I'm limited to hunting the water and I don't shoot little divers and sawbills . Mathews has 200 miles of shoreline with very little freshwater swamps or ponds , and I happen to have two FW ponds that are between 3 of my blinds and I'm hoping that a midday drink of water will have me shooting .

Just to ask are there any others that don't get to hunt at first light ?

 LD :hammer:

I have three young kids and my wife is in the car business, so I have them all day Saturday. A sitter will cost me about 100 bucks per day so they go with me on the evening/afternoon hunts. Yes, I get several birds during the middle of the day. It is a good mix and not just bluebills or ringnecks. I get pintail, widgeon, black duck/malard and gadwall during the day.

I feel your pain missing the morning shooting.

For me, two kids , a bad neck , and a nurse for a wife working 12 hour shifts and nurse work doesn't know what weekends are . I read somewhere that most non-mallard banded birds are killed near the middle of the day in the decoys , I hope to find that to be true :hammer: .

one of my spots on a salty creek, we used to leave around 10am every time. well we stayed late once and ended up dumping 4 mallards in by 11am. Since then have stayed later and you guessed it almost always better midday when they are moving to and from the early morning spots.

Some times its better to hunt later in the day, when most hunters have called it quits. Alot of birds we shoot come between the 8-10 a.m. However, if a cold front comes thru, especially in the November season, we have stayed all day, picking up ducks moving ahead of the front. Seems like mid day ducks work better and fall into the decoys, after traveling in the morning.

Just try to enjoy the time ya have LD..... whenever it is..... I've often had some good shooting mid-day. Often times ,other hunters are knockin off, maybe doing a little afterhunt scouting, boat riding and will flush a few birds, birds that just happen to be looking for a spot to land. I'm sure you'd get a few birds here and there!
