Looking to try out Pepin ...Whats the hunting like? Anyone care to give me some info on the hunting there? Where to launch area to hunt? Going in there without a clue.... Thanks guys
WW took a little rough path with his response, but he is absolutely right. You're going to one of the most heavily hunted areas around. Nobody is going to give up their spots.
To give you some answer: there is big water opportunity (lay-out hunting for divers is even possible later in the season). there is also back hole opportunity. If you haven't scouted, there is no way you can go in the dark blind and be able to do well. It really will be more difficult this year than others because of the low water as well.
40 sq miles and nobody has any help?
I thought duck hunting was a gentlemen's sport?
Isn't duck hunting chat a place to network and help fellow waterfowl hunters who are passionate about duck hunting?
Don't mean to rant on but I'm tired of the hooray for me and the heck with you attitudes.
To the O.P. if you ever hunt Meadow Valley I have a few honey holes I'll trade.

We're here to help with questions you might have, but the question you asked is more internet scouting than anything. People are very tight lipped about there public hunting spots.

What's the HP on the mud motor? If you're looking to scout the lake itself you don't need a mud motor, a tiller would do just great. I'm going to head that way this weekend myself, and I'm going to take my Go-Devil for my Merc.
Was down that general direction yesterday. Was off the main river about 1 1/2 miles on a little tributary. Saw a lot of flocks of woodies ranging from 2-30 birds. Bwt flocks from 3-20 were intermittent. I saw a handful of mallards, but not the big flocks I'd been hearing about. I talked to Warden Jumbeck, really nice guy by the way, and he said in his surveying he is noticing that most of the big ducks are staying out on the Miss. From what I saw I would have to agree. Saw a lot of green heads on the big water but a lot of small ducks are venturing away a little. He said he attributes it to a bumper crop of rice between the tracks.
Not really sure where people hunt on Lake Pepin. I have driven the Wisconsin side heading to Nelson Bottoms and never saw many areas that looked huntable other then some points. Maybe they are hunting near Red Wing. I am not really sure but I always see a ton on mergansers flying late in the year  but not much else.
i am from pepin. the lake is almost 100% private. few divers out there but nothing worth my time. i live on the lake and dont even hunt it. not trying to bs you, its just not worth much with all the refuges holding thousands of birds
Somebody on another site said they 4 of them killed 400 ducks on lake pepin this year. I dont know where all of these backwater sloughs are as when I drive the highway next to pepin I see points on the lake but that is about it. Maybe in Bay City but I have never hunted it. Pool 4 and 5 were terrrible this year by the way.
must be up by the mouth in redwing. i know all those points and ponds along 35 are private, two tresspassing tickets told me that. remember you cant believe everyone on the internet either... people like to be heros... what site is this by the way? and how stupid to you have to be to tell people where your killing ducks? then complain about pressure the next year

Well finished the season yesterday on a very good hunt. My nephew and I end should have filled up but bad shooting hurt us. We set up wrong in wind and birds were swinging wide and outside our decoys. Saw a lot of mallards early and shot 3 which all birds hit water and dove right away and we never saw them come up. Alot of bluebills and goldeneys along with thousands of Mergansers. Blue bills decoyed nice and we each filled with them and finished with some beautiful drake goldeneyes. This was the best season in the last 15 years as our group of 4 shot over 400 birds. I believe the low water conditions played a big part in it as alot of small water dried up and the river attracted more birds. I also noticed the low water helped with new vegetation which held birds. What seems crazy is that there is alot of mallards and divers still around and there still is alot of open water. Hope everyone has a great holiday season.
Don't worry man it wasn't too long ago Kris Brantner was bringing people in to hunt our area which brought more people in to hunt the area. Now, you can watch a long line of duck boats coming to hunt our area every weekend from a bigger city that he introduced people to this area. He is just as stupid.
How dare you be bold enough to hunt public water and bring people with you. It's people like you that give all the honey hole hoarders a bad name. :hi:
