working on making my duck pond better what it is a regular pond that a beaver has dammed up flooded a very small amount of the crop field and back into the timber with acorn trees. I cutted some of the willows down to give them a better landing hole. is there anything else i can do to draw ducks or make them come where i want them to be
Does the pond have a levee that you could install a flood gate in? You could control the level of water so you could plant corn, etc and then flood for season. Of course you will have to fight the beavers, but they are really pretty tasty. Also, check with your local Ag office to see about permits, the gov frowns on people messing with water.
Without seeing the lay of the land it is hard to speculate, You said the beavers dammed up one end and created a flood area. i know It sounds like a lot of work but that beaver dam could conceivably become your levee. Here we create our levees so we can control the water. Only a few inches across a wide area really improves the hunting. We change the lay of the land with a tractor and box blade and is really quite simple and easy. I bet if you talk to your local ag/ wildlife biologist they could draw up a plan that may help you. Some government programs are also available that allows for wetland creation and the gov. helps with the bills. Check this stuff out it doesn't hurt to make a few phone calls and ask. Good Luck with your project
im goin through the same thing right now, just a farm pond, and i cant drain it cuz it is a source of water for cows in the summer, just curious is there no plant or seed that can be planted in water? i seen some sort of water celery but its pretty pricey for a decent amount just wondering if there is anything to plant in shallow water or something. To answer one of your questions as to how to make it better if you dont have to worry about game wordens just get you a couple of bags of corn and toss that out ha :lol3:
You mentoned that the beavers have backed up the water in the field. Obviously there is water flowing into the pond that they have backed up. The beaver dam will be holding the water higher than the other water allowing for you to place a "Clemson Pond Leveler" through the dam. I have installed at least 6 of these devices and they do work! They allow you to drop the water down (out of the field) for planting, corn, rice, millet, etc., then turn the elbow back in the upright position, place the proper size piece of pvc joint, to flood the field when you desire........just prior to or during duck season. When you cut the groove out of the beaver dam and place your PVC pipe in the groove, the beavers will repair the damage overnite and stop the water from flowing. Then when you are ready to drop the water level, just turn down the elbow and let the water flow. You must place the cylindrical screen (I use 2x4 mesh) over the upstream opening and the holes in the PVC so the beavers can't stop it up.
Here's some info that gives complete directions and instructions on the construction in a pdf format for easy printing. Make sure you anchor it down and get it as level through the dam as possible for best possible results. Be prepared to see lots of little beavers appear when you open up the groove in the dam. "Many little hands make light work!!" Make sure you do the whole job of installing the pipe and screen and elbow the first day 'cause they'll close it off, pack it with mud and stop the water overnight.
