Hello-
I am wondering how the goose numbers are in your area? I've heard that they are up in the mid-west through DNR reports, but it's always nice to hear input from guys like us, who spend a lot of time scouting. I live near Forest Lake, MN and have been scouting for a few weeks now and... it's looking real good. My numbers are up from this time last year by about 35%. The areas I scout include; Hugo, Pine City, Forest Lake, Ham Lake, Zimmerman, Stillwater, and are lakes, rivers, fields, pastures, just about everywhere. Good luck during early goose!!

They are about ready to start getting smaller starting on the 1st.

The field corn and soy bean must be taken down first before they start multiplying in numbers where I hunt near Lake Erie. So far they are mainly hanging around freshly mowed wheat and hay fields in so so numbers (20-100+).

I'm not sure how early season will go this year........ Lets hope well.

I went out opening day in Vermont last week for resident geese, with 2 of my buddies. We ended up with 9 birds.
Ther ewas no cut corn so we had to sneak up on them in the fields and river bottoms.
Apparently not many people up here did well that day, as the corn wasnt cut in most places and most people tried to set up for them.
Gas prices are high, but it paid off driving around for the day. We were able to put the sneak on 2 different groups in which we got geese, and we came across three other groups one of which we denied permission to access the land to hunt them.

Numbers are down as compared to 10 years ago for locals. This year the DNR lowered our early season limit from 5 to 3. When compared to 30-35 years ago the numbers are way up and out of control. Back then the limit was 1 per day 5 per season and that was tough to pull off. Darn geese have taken over nearly all the locals breeding ponds these days. BW Teal and Ring-necks no longer breed or are seen in any numbers worth mentioning and Mallard numbers are way, way down.
