Tryin to decide between a redbone and a rnt call.. Had mind made up on the redbone but started to order and they offer a single and a double reed.. Never even heard of a double Reed speck call.. So which one is easier to blow?? Or should I just get the rnt??

I make goose calls. My opinion is to get a cheap one like Haydels . Speck calling is all in the rhythm and back pressure. In a pinch, you can get your short reed Canada call to break like a speck. The Specklebellies don't seem to have a complex language, and I don't see spending a lot on a call that won't do anymore than what you can on a cheaper one. That is my 2 cents.

Redbone is a premium speck call, rnt is not.

There are only two big boys in this game, redbone and riceland.

Single reed, takes less air to operate, very efficient, but not as forgiving as a double.

Double reed, takes more air to run(but not by a huge amount, only slightly),louder,is more forgiving and can withstand more air volume and pressure from the caller, especially on the low end.

I personally prefer redbone for the increased tonal range and distinctness displayed in the notes.

Out of the ones I have tried, Riceland has the best available. I have never tried Redbone. I disagree with the post that specks don't have a complex language. If you are hunting pressured birds a good call that makes several different sounds will help. That being said a Haydel's speck call is a good beginner call.

The Redbone has big guts and the RNT small ones. Having started out on small gutted calls, running them is second nature to me, and I never noticed a difference in terms of ease of operation between they and my big gutted Riceland until a little gator put the bite on my fingers last Summer. Had the dickens of a time getting the RNT's back pressure right with center-punched fingers but no trouble at all with the Riceland. So I'd think a new caller would have an easier time getting underway with bigger guts.

I needed something that would allow me to grab the attention of far trafficing birds,YET allow a good low end for once the birds respond and are at a more resonable distance.

I also started running into a problem of the birds going stale after a good initial response. Even though I was running a solid middle range,I felt I needed the ability to get more toward the extremes of range. In my opinion, big bores, either single or double reed---afford the caller more useable range.

I don't command birds from the sky,I still get humbled EVERY hunt, but my primary aim is realism. The journey is long for all of us. The speck language is among the most complex in my opinion, including knowing when to shut up as a caller.
