Block the air with your tongue and then release it with instant high pressure and then lower the pressure. You don't do it like you spit, but the idea of spitting the air is kind of there in that it is a sudden force of air. It is like a cluck but drawn out and with an instant start to the sound with no build up like a cluck. The short spit sounds a lot like a fast cluck, but again instant and with no build up.

I do it like this;
Start with my tongue between my lips with alot of pressure behind it. It's like trying to spit something off the tip of your tongue. As you retract and drop your tongue, the pressure is released, causing immediate break in the reed. Use just enough pressure NOT to lock the call. Once breakover has been reached, back off on the pressure. There you have it. Pretty simple really. If you really are looking for a reference word, "T-Haww" would be the one I use.The spit note can be hard for many to learn, but once you've got it, it's very easy.
Remember, hand control also plays a factor in this call sounding right. Keep your hand fairly tight for the initial burst of air, then open up to allow the "Haww". Keep practicing and you'll get it.

I've got my duck vocabulary down pretty good and this summer I'm going to really focus on getting goosey. What does the spit call really do for the geese? I know its never just a one note game, but is this used when they're coming in, finishing, turning or just another good note to add to the series?

What's the best Goose calling CD you guys have?
I've got the RNT ones, Foiles, Sean Mann and Zink's videos... Still looking for the right one though any ideas.

Plainsman nailed it. Think of it kind of like using a blowgun with air let off at the end. Basically it's the second part of a honk drawn out or the second part of a drawn out hail call. The only difference it you start right off with it rather than build with an initial low sound. Try to just cut the air off with the back of your tongue in the roof of your mouth. It only takes a very quick air stop and a fast burst of air. You can almost do it with just a fast airburst when you get the hang of it. Try a little backpressure to help build the air fast. That is how I do it; a little backpressure to start with a quick tongue to the roof and hit the air pressure and open the hand just after it stats out.

Best CD I have heard is Bad Grammer. Each note is broken down as to how to make it, live geese doing it, and when and how to use the notes. I don't think it can get much better than that, but I haven't heard everything that is out there.

Mix it in geese do it all the time in the air and on the ground. I mix it in to get them cranked up when they are excited. I mix it in with clucks and double clucks. Can be used as a comeback call as in the HEE HAW; I like that and do the hee haw and get faster and more pleading and transition in to drawn out spit notes for the peak. It's a great excitement note and it is easy to do once you get it.

the bad grammar CD is what did it for me.... like the other guys said you are just building up the air and then busting it out, i dont have the spit fully but i am almost there with another day or two i should have it reformed... for me the refferance words just confused me and i was doing it very wrong, but now that i realized it is just a huge build up and then a release it makes a whole lot more sense. good luck, bad grammar is the way to go.

you kno what i think.... every single pro caller has ever said to me.... "Do not do the spit note in the field" "no matter what you really dont need it"..... now that just might be my area, but on jeff foiles goose calling 2.0 they show a goose doing a spit note when the guys start shooting and killing geese around that goose...it soundsl ike an alert call to me..... all i can say is that..that call will nto be in my hunting vocabulary, maybe on the conest stage, but never field... you all might think different, but thats my .02

The pit boss video is fairly good, i don't know if you can get it without getting the call but it really goes into spit notes and hand placement for the note
