Speck Decoys Helpful?

I hunt in Central Illinois and usually we have alot of specks in the area. We just leased a pit and have enough canada goose decoys and a few mallard full bodies (I think we'll be shooting mostly ducks anyway). But recently I was told that we should definitely look into getting speck decoys. One man said that he runs more specks than canadas in the area. If anyone is familiar with the area they might have some good advice. I may post this in the Illinois forum as well. Thanks for anyone who has input.

I use about 3 specklebelly mojos in my field spread. The rest of my spread consists of 7 dozen Hardcore lessers. My theory is they are smaller than a life size mallard but painted like a canada goose so you can target both species. Also, they are more expensive than Bigfoot decoys so they must be really good quality. You get what you pay for I guess. I've shot the **** out of pigeons over that spread! :welcome:

If you don't have the money to sacrifice, your Canada spread should be sufficient. I watch specks follow Canada's all the time. They think they are eating, then they will come in for a closer look. Make sure you have a speck call handy though. last year at the kern refuge, I turned around a party of 7 or so specks with a Canada call and no decoys. :lol3:

Bill, what brand are the mojos? are they mojo brand or edge? I can see where your coming from with the lesser theory. I'll pass on the hardcores though because i keep seeing posts about dakotas, I assume they are better from all the feedback. I also hunt pigeons but only over soar no more decoys. I get the best results with those.

Don't know how it us farther up the flyway, but here at the bottom end of it specks hate spinners. Were it me, I'd get a good handle on running a speck call and not worry about adding speck decoys, as specks will feed in close association with Canadas and may even give your current decoys a closer look trying to pick out the speck they think they hear from among them.

Id say it depends on the field you're hunting. Specs are a grain feeder so youd be ok in Milo, Corn, Beans, rice, but if youre hunting a wheat field forget it. Specs don't normally eat green wheat stems but will eat the grains left over in wheat stuble

Specks eat the heck out of greens here in Louisiana. Most hunters want rice fields, but day in, day out give this one a once or twice-plowed field or well grazed pasture coming up in new greens. Farmers here have only recently gone back to trying to grow winter wheat, now that so many of "our" specks are wintering farther north.
