hello ladies, I was just wondering if anyone could help out with my daughter. She finally got her hunters safety and now she would like to try and hunt ducks with me. I took her to check out some guns but she just looked so uncomfortable with each one I looked at. Does anyone have any suggestions and better yet do any of you know where I could get her some clothing and a shotgun pretty inexpensive justt in case she doesn't like it( like other things I have tried with her).
Thanks everyone
Carl

Go for a youth gun. Smaller and less expensive. Mosberg 20G(500e) that is the one I use. It was fairly inexpensive. As far as clothes I would look for youth clothes( usually boys). I would check out the different hunting stores online(basspro, cabelas, macks prairie wings, etc... for clearance clothes. Usually pretty cheap. Or just find some of your old clothes and roll up sleves and legs until you find out if she will even like it. Good luck! I hope she loves it!

How old and what size is your daughter? Who knows what I may have laying around.

Like huntingmama said, keep an eye on sales at those websites. However, youth and women's clothing is more of a niche market (unfortunately) so they don't tend to run sales too ofter. Ebay was worked well for me in the past, sometimes there's a fair selection other times not so much. I wear old Army BDU's and like them. I just needed a small men's size and because they're somewhat adjustable in the waist they fit quite well.

As for guns, definately try to find her a youth model, she'll need that shorter stock.

I think it's great that your encouraging your daughter! I have so many great memories hunting with my dad.

Congrats on taking out your daughter - she's a lucky girl!

There is almost zero women's waterfowl clothing, so we usually have to settle for the smallest men's or the largest boys' clothes. One exception: Cabela's has one women's waterfowl jacket, and one or two sets of women's waders. Many men's jackets don't come in smalls, but Drake does. I haven't tried them yet, but I'm about to - just ordered one of their jackets today.

One of the most important things to do with the gun - if you haven't done this already - is to check for her dominant eye. I've heard about 80 percent of women are cross dominant, which means if we're right-handed normally, we'll actually shoot better left handed. (Then of course it helps to have a stock cast for leftie shooting.)

If you can spring for a gun-fitting by a great gunsmith or stock man, go for it - that helps a lot.

Couple other things you need to know as a dad taking out a girl:

* Our fingers and toes get really cold really easily. When the rest of me is warm, my fingertips are ice cubes. You might want to get some little chemical heat packs for her feet and hands.

* It's a lot more hassle for us to take a leak than it is for you, and we tend to be more modest about it. Not sure how you wanna handle that, but if you're hunting at a refuge loaded with people, you should warn her that she probably won't be able to hide when she drops her waders.

Those are the big items I can think of. From what I've heard about dads hunting with daughters, you have a lot of great times in front of you. I hear over and over again that we're more observant and less competitive, and guys tell me that comes to them as a pleasant surprise.

Have a great time!

My wife, she is doing research on women and hunting so we check the women's chat every once and a while, uses a browning bps micro (youth) 20 gauge. She also uses an old browning 12 gauge that has a short length of pull in the stock...but the 12 is a full size gun. Not cheap guns, but she loves the micro. She also uses a browning micro .308 for deer. good luck.

I've gotten all my kids camos on e-bay and my own. I just use Army fatigues. We looked in stores, but forget it, the prices were outrageous. Also, Wal-Mart is fairly cheap, but I don't think they have youth, only small adult sizes. My son fit into the x-small army fatigues when he was about 10.

we took my daughter out for her first hunt a few weeks ago. and if you think finding camo for a girl is hard try finding it for a 4 year old. SHE LOVED IT, and no longer wants to stay at nana's while we hunt. but what I did for her was dressed her as warm as I could and took a peice of scrap mossy oak (from Joann's fabrics) I think it was 2 yards and cut a hole in the top and put it over her. It worked great!!! maybe a semi-gilly suit would work if you don't want to try to find hunting stuff.

Thats exactly what I was thinking of doing next season for my will be 4yo. Just some netting or something like a cloak. My wifes from Vegas and Im from Minnesota so our ideas are different when it comes to the outdoors lol. Took her out duck hunting for her 1st time this past season and she got hooked. Shes even got the scouts eye when were driving around. Its now a contest between all of us to see who can spot the most ducks.

Well i can tell you that Cabela's now has a womans line for Waterfowl. They even carry the youth clothing yes it can be pricey if you dont catch it in the bargin cave. I have an 8 and 9 year old and both love for dady to take them to the duck blind. Only thing is they like the pink camo cloths still trying to break them of that LOL

I've got two daughters got the lefty a mossberg 500 because of the tang safety, the other a 870 youth both in 20 ga.They both still shoot em and their 27 and 29 years old now.I did have to add a inch to the youth gun.I started all my kids with the same H&R 20 ga. single barrel though. When their young and inexperienced I like to look over at the hammer, and after it goes bang in the excitment I like a empty gun.
