I used a Minolta film SLR since 1996 which I bought in a pawn shop and bought some good old glass and it was a no brainer to move up to the Sony A100 which I used for two weeks and upgraded to the Sony A200 two years ago and had great warranty service and I now have ten good lens each doing a certain job some for portraits, landscapes.macros, wide angles for homes and tele for nature and wildlife. The Sony glass was good for being a kit type lens I upgraded to the 18-55 and 55-200 which does some good clear sharp photos along with some classic minolta glass which is very affordable..as a matter of fact I picked up an old classic Minolta 7000 along with a flash and bag and a standard to compare to lens the old 1985 50mm f1.7 for $40. My other lens were picked up at basement prices as the public felt the Minoltas were not on par being an old number defunct three in popularity and advertising....well that is fine for me as I can buy them cheap and they do hold their own compared to similar competitors. All of my posted pics came from my Sony A200
I am looking to buy a 400mm lens soon for $500 and may get a 500 mirror lens for $200
The Sony A200 is rumored to have noise after ISO 800 but I rarely shoot that high for wildlife as I have the lens that can handle low light to good light and i am capable of using combinations to achieve results ie I shot my son's Grad in an auditorium at ISO 1600 and a 70-210 f4 lens in aperture priority , IS noise reduction on with the EV bumped up
I have had Canons and Nikons before and a Nikon had served me well in my job and a canon sureshot that took pics of my firstborn and my real estate job a long time ago ..besides at that time it was easy to move up from my top of the line
super compact Sony H-7 for an extra $150 and the Sony had some pretty easy menu functions to taylor to my specific needs
I got a camera that suited my budget and expectations.

I bought my wife a slightly used D40 in May and we love it. It's just the bottom end model but I think it's great for what it is. We have a 55-200mm lens for it as well at the original 18-55mm, but I'd like to get a bigger one for it like a 70-300mm. Something like that is really what we need for the wildlife shots we'd like to be doing.

ended up buying her a Canon Rebel XS, has 10.1 megapixels. plan on getting more lenses over time, (maybe a 55-200mm for christmas and a fixed 35 or 50mm later on) but for now the kit lens will suffice. her bday is not til 10/28 so its still in the box.

this camera seems to be the competition for nikon's d3000, and is priced about the same. i'll report back after she's had it for awhile and taken a few hundred pics or so.
