okay i have found a choke from a buddy to use with my 887 its restriction is .650 i cant find another choke online with anything lower than 655 now my question is what type patternis this gonna throw should i get to thinking bout a red dot or would the hi vis bead on my rig be good enough i have never had a problem layin them down with a bead before but i used to use a jellyhead in a mossberg 500. i will be able to shoot the rig tomorrow but just hoping i could get a heads up on what to expect.
The only way to really know is to put it to paper. The same load through different chokes can pattern drastically different than what one may expect in as much as different loads through the same choke can vary.
In my experience if one gets too tight of a pattern the chances of a clean miss at short to medium range go way up. There is a balance between a tight enough pattern to be effective at longer ranges and one so tight it shoots like a rifle at "in your face" distances. You just need to determine how tight of a pattern you need for the typical distance and terrain you hunt and choke your gun appropriately by patterning every one with your actual hunting load.
Normally dont like chokes that tight, wouldnt go any smaller than #6 shot at low to mid velocities. Then again might give you great patterns, good luck and let us know how it turns out.
well love the choke, it actually patterned excellent with win supreme 3 1/2 inch number fives from 20 yards out to 60 killed one bird saturday(opener) at 12 steps and absolutely shredded it. and found out no need for red dot, hi vis works great. thanks for the help guys
Congrats on the bird, glad to hear everything worked out for you. What gun, choke, and shell combo were you using again, might list for others to use the info who might have same gun. Congrats again.
