Strange things duck eat ?

Postby rembo » Mon Dec 28, 2009 3:34 pm

Whats the strangest thing you've ever seen wild ducks feeding on ? We recently hunted Mallards over a harvested cotton field. The mallards,( & a few pintail ), were gobbling up the leftover cotton balls / husks like they were candy the night before, so we set up in the morning & sure enough they came right back. The leftover cotton balls had a couple hard seeds in them, so I guess the birds were after them even if it meant ingesting some cotton with them. Ive also found mallards' crops filled with freshwater clam shells ( they sounded like a maraca when you shook them) & immature dates from a palm tree on more than one occasion. Since this is a nation wide forum, I expect there are some interesting stories out there. Maybe the cotton thing isnt so rare, but Ive never seen it before.

doves and ducks love cotton seeds. Very oily and nutricious. Just dont get to them much. I ve seen doves pull seeds out of cotton still on the plants. Now another weird one is shooting geese over a pasture where they are coming in to eat the corn out of the cow sh*t.

I have shot mallards that were stuffed w/ salmon eggs. Typically, those birds year end and year out are always the best eating I have ever had! Just like over sized teal. But, if the eggs had gone bad, the birds stunk so bad that you could not eat them.

We were hunting on the bay on the other side of a park, when the sky filled with mallards. My brother in law shot a big fat drake. When he picked it up he said this duck is sick its foaming at the mouth. When I took a closer look i noticed it was white bread. He was loaded up from the people in the park feeding him.

Wierdest thing would be some kind of red krill things. Killed a greenhead last year that was full of it and had it coming out of his mouth when I picked him up. Also I killed a greenhead a couple weeks back that was full of acorns that were almost the size of golf balls. Don't know how he got something that big down. Biggest acorns i've ever seen

Shot a merganser with a 5" squawfish coming out of it's mouth. Never shot another merganser and that was 8 years ago.
