Merganser good to eat?

Postby duckbuddy » Sun Jan 01, 2006 4:30 pm

Okay i been seeing post on people showing pictures of merganser. I swear i never shoot a merg unless it was a hooded merg to be mounted. Are people really that disperate in filling their limits or do they shoot mergs for a reason(tasty meat?). shot a merg last year and wheew dang thing smell like ****.

I shot 2 hooded today, one hen one drake, but we're going to make all of our ducks into jerky pretty soon, so hopefully they will turn out good. Yes The hooded drake would be a very good mount.

You cook them on a hickory baord in the oven for 1 our at 350 degrees, pull it out, throw away the Mergy and eat the board!!!! Those things smell up your house so bad, smell like sewer when they are cooking, I dont shoot them at all anymore, learned that hard lesson years ago.

If they dont make decoys for them, they probably arent worth eating.

yello there are a lot of merg decoys on the market your just not looking in the right spot.I personally do not care for them although I will happily say I saw maybe only 25% of them this year as I had in the past few years. The only good merg is a hooded and that is for a mount, now if I could only pull the trigger on one

Thats the only kind we have here is hooded mergansers. We could propably kill one a week at least. They are not considered part of our daily limit, they are a bonus duck and you can kill one. As far as eating them, I think you could put anything in gumbo and it tastes great.

Bonus Duck, I think I am missing something Mergansers are not part of your duck limit because mergies have their own limit thus they are not ducks

In Idaho's regs it doesn't say anything about mergansers... Does this mean that they do or don't count towards my limit? I've been keeping it safe and counting them towards my limit, but maybe i don't have too?

Idaho includes mergies in your duck limit for whatever reason, I have never seen a state do that, you guys are getting the shaft

well with as many 'limits' as we have gotten this year, it is almost a good thing that they do count towards our limits... it sounds a lot better that way... "yeah i was one away from my limit" rather than "yeah i got two ducks today"

ISHOOT DIVERS,
That's a nice avatar you have. Never seen a confederate flag for a "Yankee" state. Nice touch.
There's a reason it's called huntin' and fishin' instead of killin' and catchin'

UNfortunately in the state of CT ganzers are now included in our bags...which keeps me from using them as target practice anymore because i dont want them in my bag or i'll give em' a burial at sea!
Bring em' in close!
