Would you guys or gals mount a MallardxDomestic?

Postby KwaKAddict » Wed Oct 05, 2011 4:38 pm

I shot a mallard the otherday that was obviously unique. It has a black head with some green, the tail feathers are white, and the wings are gray. I was just wondering on what other duck hunters think about a domestic crossed mallard and if they would mount it. Im not quite sure how to add pictures either so bare with me.. I cant figure out how to put a picture on here.. any help?

It's a decision only you can make. Is it a "trophy"? Have special meaning to you? A bird you really like? A rare occurrence? Those are some things to consider. But it comes down to you if you want to or not.

Are you quite sure that it is a mallard peiking cross? Could it possibly be a piebald?

Either way, it is unique enough that I'd mount it.

Thank you three for the nice comments, I am not sure what it is. I was just wondering what kindof attitude a domestic x Mallard brings to the table... I want to mount it.. perfect condition, but i dont want someone to see it mounted and ask "why did you mount that?"

I'd mount it. It's doesn't really look like a domestic duck

Yea, he definetly looks like a true wild mallard, just a different type of plumage. Thats why was all confused when i shot it.

In my opinion, if you look at the pic that sherlock posted, his has got a piece of tape around the foot where a band would go. i probably wouldn't mount that one. all of the ducks on the university campus has that. but as far as yours goes, to me it doesn't really look too much like a tame mallard. i'd mount it!!

EDIT: sorry, i guess it's not a piece of tape on sherlock's duck haha.

pretty cool looking bird. hybrid birds are tough to come by, so I say throw that sucker on the wall. of course you will have some people say: "Why the heck did you mount that?". Just ask them when was the last time they shot a wild hybrid mallard (or any other hybrid)?.

Good Job!

that could very well be a blond drake mallard.usually the blonde occurs in hens but drakes are known to do it as well.it is a pigment defect effecting plumage i would mount it u probably will never kill another!my buddies killed two a couple years ago they came in together.and looked simular to yours.

who cares what someone else would do or say!!!!thats one of the reasons I quit mounting deer ..One guy would walk in and ridicule another's head.[size] .I mounted a muscovy last year it was miles from a park or town or anybody that raised them flying wild with mallards. The guy was very pleased with it and I told him they are wild south of the border.

I shot one a few years ago on the river, weighed 6lbs 1 oz. Drake mallard with a white and brown body and a white patch on the head. I caught all kinds of hell from my buddies for shooting a farm duck.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

I think I probably mount it, It is a unique duck for sure. I still dont know for sure exactly what caused the coloration, however I am attending South Dakota State, and majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife, i have to get the time to ask the professors what they think. Thanks for all the reply's.

It is always a personal choice, for me if the bird came in with other ducks and it was unique and memorable to me get it mounted...
