How was your opener?

Postby RefugeRat4Life » Tue Oct 23, 2012 8:17 am

Hello fellow duck destroyers,

This is my first post and I thought I would start it out with a great question...

HOW WAS YOUR OPENER???

Answer with...

1. Where were you? What refuge were you at?(not your exact pond or blind at a refuge, because I know we value that information like our wives value their diamonds...lol)

2. Did you pull a resi or did you sweat line it?

3. How was the weather?

4. What did you take?

That should be plenty but if you wanna add something else, please do!!!

Here is how my opener went...

My three hunting buddys and I did not get drawn for any of the opening Saturdays in Los Banos so we decided to sweat line it. We went down to Los Banos on friday at 5 to get to the hunter stations at Volta and San Luis to put in for the lotto. I drew number 31 at San Luis(which isnt bad at all) and my other buddys did not, so we head over to Volta to check our results there. Lucky enough two of our guys got drawn for #15 and #27 at Volta. So we camped out in the parking lot and got to it in the morning. The weather was a little warm for my taste, 60 degrees Fahrenheit, when we woke up at 4 am. We got out to our spot at about 6 am which left us 46 minutes to get our deeks right and watch the sun come up and the birds start flying. Man, there were so many birds! You could hear the teal bombing over you at 40+ mph sounding like F15 fighters but you couldn't see em. The mallards were callin and pintail were whistlin. I was shaking with excitement as the minutes drew closer to hammer time. Sure enough at about 642 you had some @****** shooting early so the birds were really moving around now. The first five minutes after shoot time there wasnt a bird in range to hit, I was not worried though because there were so many birds... I started to hit the call when a group of pintail were out at about 250 yards and they made a turn for our open water near the deeks. I dropped two as soon as they came in range and I realized... its here! its finally here! My 2012/2013 season had begun! All in all it was a great day and I ended up with 3 GWT, 2 BWT, and 2 Drake Pintail. All I know is that every refuge was at about a 4 bird average for the day with a little more or less, give or take.

Its here boys and girls! Time to get some!!!! :grooving:

Well seeing that the limit is 7, the answer to your question would be YES.

How did you do?

i didnt go on the first day of the season. I ended up going the next day with a friend of mine in a swamp we have. It was about 6:35 and i asked my friend to check and see if it was shooting time. He pulled out his phone and soon as he did 2 wood ducks flew in and i shot both of them. He didnt really seem to csre so we sat there and hunted a little longer. A little while later we were picking up the dekes and a group of 4 wood ducks come in and i shot 1 to finish my limit on wood ducks. So my opening day was pretty good

I have no idea what you are talking about with Sweat Lines and Resi's ???
But here you go....

Great South Bay, Long Island.
Mirror slick calm. 45 degrees....
Top of the tide and falling

The spread: 4 black duck, pair of mallards, pair of hoodies..
I had a bunch of opps for blacks, but too early.
3 buffs, one hoodie.

Rerigged in a different spot for 30 minutes of brant...
Got one chubby brant

home for breakfast.
fun morning alone.

Nice, I am currently at 32 on the season. Got skunked saturday on the Delta for the first time... but I saw about half a million geese flying from field to field. An amazing sight for sure!

Good amount of wood ducks right there! I never have had the pleasure to hunt any mergansers. Was the coot a mistake or just for some population control? ;)
