Green-Winged Teal Migration

Postby Trout&Duck » Wed Aug 21, 2013 5:25 pm

I hunt up in Wisconsin and was wondering how late in the year GWT stay in the state in decent numbers. I know they migrate later than BWT but not sure how much.

I shoot them in decent numbers into mid November here in the central part of the state.

The GWT that I mounted was shot on November 17th. Was hunting Pool 4 at the time. They stick around quite late.

Also, Woodies stick around a lot longer than most people believe. I've flushed quite a few around Christmas, while fishing the river near Red Wing.

I hunt in eastern Iowa. We shot a GWT the last day of the season last year, mid Dec.

We shot two I believe during our opener last weekend, so they are starting to migrate. Seen LOTS of them but they wouldnt commit (lack of water, we were hunting over mud). Did get some dumb young BWT to commit to our mud hole. I saw more GWT than BWT.

Here in Colorado I've shot them in 90 degree weather during early season and in -20 degree weather in late January. If GWT are able to get to their food source then they will stick around

For the last twelve years the northern gwt hit the Mississippi around Hastings ,MN on or around Nov.2 like clock work. their around for a week and move on. but if your looking for a wall mount drake that's the time for one.
