Blue Wing Teal Decoying

Postby SquadIrons » Tue Oct 08, 2013 10:46 am

From what I understand GWT will decoy readily to mallard decoys. I have never seen blue wing teal until today when I scouted a spot loaded with them. Will they decoy just as readily to mallards?

I think mallard dekes are the most popular because it seems that every species will flock to them. I have shot limits of scaup, gadwall, teal, and you name it over them. I have actually been decoying the majority of my wood ducks and teal this year over a set of 4 big foot Canadian decoys.

I have Canadians, too, that I plan to put out. I have really only hunted post-thanksgiving so all the teal are gone by then, as well as many other species.

Teal decoy to everything... I think arrangement of your spread is more important that species and size of them.

They will decoy to pop bottles floating in the water if you have a mojo going. They are, IMO, dumber than GWT.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

Teal generally decoy best to whirligigs, regardless of what decoys accompany the spinner. (Which you'll want to be able to turn off for geese.) When I put teal decoys with my mallards in the regular season, they're for the mallards. When I put teal decoys with my mallards during the September bluewing season, they're for my hunters.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

The one day I got into them this season we had 18 mallard decoys and had 2 groups about 150-200 yards from us. Both those groups had mojos, we killed 17 and they killed 2 combined. So yes, mallard decoys work. But I have also been out-shot by groups with 2 mojos and no decoys...

Seems like teal love mojos and they will decoy to anything.

Handful of mallards, a spinner and a jerk rig works for us. Mainly hens
