Coots?

Postby RShockley » Fri Nov 01, 2013 9:41 am

Found a spot while scouting today that was covered with about 1000+ coots. If that many coots are there is it likely that other ducks will use this area as well?

Believe it or not the coots will help you. Throw out some decoys do a little to no calling. They see the motion from the coots and they come right in. One tip I give to hunters who ask for decoy tips is have different decoys. Even coots in your bag. It raises your chance to bag other types flying by and wary ducks are used to the common hunter with all mallards or whatever. Mix it up, bag wary ducks.

Thanks. Yeah, I started out with just mallards when I first started duck hunting 4 years ago. I have since added teal, pintails, widgeon, and gadwall. I might add a few redheads or some geese as well.

One thing that I found that works as funny as it may be is get a blue Herron decoy if you have them in your area and set it up about 50 yards or so from your spread.

The only problem I have found with that many coot being around(depending on how close to you they are) is it can often be hard to pull ducks away from a raft of live birds that size.
