Postby Stoneys52 » Tue Nov 12, 2013 8:08 pm

Here in pa opening day to the second season is Friday and I have a vacation day I was goin to go down Thursday night before dark. that will be the only time that I will have to do that. Then Friday and Saturday ill be hunting. Should I throw out all fifteen decoys? Or go with a small set of maybe half a dozen on the local swamp

It's a three way swamp three maybe football field sized swamps all connected some what we only have permission too hunt the one on the left and are setting up in the middle of it on the bank. Because usually the ducks come off of the surrounding creeks and rivers in the morning

Then yes I would spread them out. Find a good hide and your set.

the colder the temp the closer you want your decoys to each other. But still I would use 15 decoys, put them in family groups.

Got to the swamp today and it was froze over say there for three/four hours and only saw a blue heron. So I went down to a spring fed farm pond after walking the river for nothing, had to sneak up on them on the pond but crawling through the mud was worth it! Got a mallard drake and a gadwall drake! Back to the swamp tomorrow morning hoping its not froze

With 15 decoys it won't matter. Just throw them out in a group and sit there... especially if there is ice. When there is ice the birds all hunker close together. 15 together in a small group would look natural.

Don't over think it, you cannot come up with a spread the ducks have not seen already this year. Just toss them out and hunt.

I like small sets, 5 or 6 mallards or such, and off the the side; a couple teal deeks. Or a coot or two. Easy to pack and I can have more " other" things in my pack bag.
