Search it, we just talked about it about it a couple days ago, and some good techniques were brought up.

Sledge hammer, shovel, axe, or even a hoe will work depending on the thickness. I've heard of people using chainsaws as well

All I've ever used is my foot, on up to 1 1/2" ice while wading a stream

if you cant walk on it, break the ice. break open a big hole and you'll need a way to keep it open. killed 80% of my birds in opened up ice this year.

I use my jet sled. Lean on it once you get a hole and push down and walk behind it. I put some water in it for added weight. Works on ice up to about 1-1/2 inch. After that , I use a pick-axe, and if that is too hard, I use full body decoys and forget the floaters.

Are you trying to make a hole in a pot hole or busting you way out with a boat to open water?

X2 on the sledge hammer. We used a chainsaw as well.
I hope someday someone remembers this old dog with kindness and gives me to a puppy.

Up to half inch I use my decoy bag full of decoys and lay it in front of me and push down to break. Work into squares and start by pushing the first square under or over the ice then next and so on.

falling through works too, just make sure its shallow enough underneath so u can touch the bottom. Getting back onto the ice is the tricky part.
