First Black Duck

I killed my first black today and originally I thought it was a drake. Upon further review, I think it was a hen. What do you all think?

What will screw you up is that they frequently get a "murky" looking bill.... with dark spots all over it...like it is smeared in mud.
I usually don't get bills that are as "cartoonish" as the one you got...

Get some binoculars and go to the local park pond in the off season..it's a great way to work on bird ID and calling..
I did that all the time when I was getting started...I'd get a coffee and go with my GF

Got it. Originally I was sure it was a drake but then started reading about id's and DU website says hens have a full green bill. Later I found another site that said it's more like olive green. Thanks for the help!

Left is a hen. Right is a drake.

Drake is also the bigger of the two brown footballs flying towards you if paired.
