Chris,
I've never made a jerk string before, this is my first. I used fishing line on an old catfish reel. with half a pole. I figured it'd make for easy transportation and less of a tangle. The pound test on the line is 14 so I reckon it'll hold up well.
Most guys will use a bit heavier line and abrassion resistant line at that. Some even will use heavy braided nylon (30lb).
A stiff ice fishing pole works well too about a 3 footer.
If using a boat--remember to have a stand made for the rod, that way when you head out to get a bird of similar you just leave the rod next the the boat blind.
I'm sure a few others will post up their experinces as I do mostly hunting from a boat and no flooded timber or from permanent water blinds.
