It is going to take some experience. You are only going to get it hunting. For me it is the fast wing beat, the way a flock of them fly. I don't know quite how to put it into words, maybe almost like a swarm of bees. Then there is the blue wing patches on the blue wing teal when they are flying. On the water the almost remind me of a mini spoonbill. The bill is not as large but it stil gives me that impression. Teal don't head bob while flying or while swimming like a wood duck. They are a blast to hunt and I really like eating them. You can drop 10 of them in the turkey fryer at one time, 10 minutes in 350* oil and they are awesome.

Follow some other people out, set up close to them, shoot every bird that comes in and identify after they're dead. That's how most people learn these days.

Yes, there are, and you will have several specie in your marsh during early teal season. They'll all be brown, too. As has been said, you'll have to work on your identification skills to keep from shooting at the occasional hen pintail/shoveler/wigeon/etc. The shovelers will be the most easily mistaken for Bluewings: they aren't much larger, and have the same blue wing coverts.
If in doubt, wait it out. Don't shoot unless you know for sure that it a Bluewing at the end of your barrel.

It's not always easy. We've had a flock of bluewings come in, have downed a handful, then gone out and picked up four bluewings and a shoveler. Do your best, and go with an experienced duck hunter the first season. He can help you ID the legal birds.

Good luck, have fun, and don't take offense at KRB's suggestions; he was giving you good advice (even if it wasn't exactly what you were looking for....)

I live ten minutes from blackshear. I have my whole life. Ducks are great until you have more hunters than ducks. But when the pressure hits the ducks go to some places most hunters just don't know about. And very hard to get to. But I killed some mallards red heads pintails and wood ducks there last year.

Ok do you find that scouting too much makes the birds scarce. ?
Can you scout from the shoreline ? How far from Macon do you live ?
Would be awesome to meet up at lake Juliette !!!
