RNT Custom Orders

Postby QwackAddict33 » Thu Mar 07, 2013 6:06 pm

I have a question for you RNT guru's, I would like to get an MVP made up in wood but i have never seen one done. Which Im sure someone would have wanted to get a wooden MVP made at some point? Would Butch do a wooden MVP if i was supplying the wood or no?
Thanks guys i appreciate it!

I have a couple of wood MVP's, so yes they will. What kind of wood are you planning on using?

I thought id do Hedge as i kind of have an RNT hedge collection going but after really looking into some other types of wood I now have these on the list to choose from:
Stabilized Big Leaf Maple Burl
Spalted Madrone Burl
African Blackwood
Box Elder
Hedge

Just remember if you do burl you won't have a burl insert. Go with Cocobolo, Hedge, African Blackwood, etc. Simple woods.

I've run a blackwood MVP that sounded pretty good.

My choice would depend on what your intentions are for it. If it's to be a solid wood hunting call the blackwood or hedge would be tough to beat. The others will look good, and sound good as well with an acrylic insert. They might be my choice if you're wanting to add it to a collection.

I should have mentioned earlier but these calls will NOT be hunted at all, straight to the shelf. Now i would like to stick with an all wood call and one type of wood for the insert and barrel. Would I be able to get away with a burl insert if it is only going to be a shelf queen?

I'm not sure if it would make an insert. I'd vote for black wood in an all wood call.

X2 for the blackwood. Exhibition grade birdseye maple for a shelf queen.

I believe you have an all wood Blackwood MVP right? How does it sound? Blackwood having the similar tonal qualities to acrylic is the Blackwood MVP loud?

I have an ebony and a wenge MVP. They sound similar to any other wood vs acrylic comparison. They are slightly more mellow in tone, but are surprisingly loud. Based on my experience with other blackwood calls, I'd think it would sound very similar to an acrylic MVP.

Thanks for all the suggestions on wood guys i appreciate it! Im leaning towards hedge right now so that i can stay with an all wood call. Would RNT turn a wood mondo? If so i got some really good ideas for it.

I don't feel as though I was much help, but having experience with black wood I'm sure you can understand what I mean. To me, the density of that wood provides a similar crispness that acrylic does. It also seems to be lifelike and mellow at the same time.

Not as of now, I have brought it up with Butch multiple times while talking with him but they are not doing it as of now.

I asked Butch a year ago if a wood Mondo could be had,he said most likely not at that time, but down the road it could be an option.

If the burl has been stabilized they can make an insert out of it.
I doubt they will let Butch turn the call even if he wanted to.
I've heard things are gett'in a little weird around the shop these days .
Butch doesn't get to do much beside tune calls most of the time from what I have heard .
Pretty lame IMOP !!!
Hell they need the old man to rejig 99% of their new calls ,because they don't even sound like RNT's anymore.

Can't speak for RNT, but most callmakers will not make toneboards/cork notches from stabilized burls whether they'll be shelf queens or not. Fact is, you sell a call and your name is on it regardless of what its first owner says it will or won't be used for. The reason being the wonky grain direction tends to make for a very delicate cork notch and the fact is even when stabilized some woods just don't make great toneboards sound-wise. The responsible thing to do is use acrylic for the entire insert or use a good wood or acrylic for the toneboard/cork notch/exhaust bore and sleeve it into a hunk of burl that'll serve as the exposed part of the insert. Pretty sure you won't get RNT to do that.

I had a Red Wood burl new old style from RNT. Both the insert and barrel were redwood. Not saying they will or wont do it anymore but it has been done by them. Wish I wouldve kept the thing.
No contest ring. No gimmicks. No compromising. It’s just pure, raw, balls-to-the-wall, don’t tell your mother, most powerful, non-nuclear duck calling machine on the planet. This call may not be for everyone. But if you can drive it, Game over......
