mistake calling

Postby aunt betty » Tue Sep 17, 2013 1:08 pm

Several mistakes I made and I see people make the same ones commonly.

1) Never call at ducks directly overhead. They spot you.

2) when calling and ducks circle you...you have to let them fly quite a ways out on the downwind leg of the corner-calling pattern.
Fail to do this and the ducks circle one, two, three times and fly away.
Not calling at the right time is more important than good calling any old time.

3) Dont highball incoming ducks on their final glide. Random feed chuckle.

My favorite... Don't try calling birds when you have not practiced since last season when you sounded like a kazoo. Just because you brought a call does not mean you should use it.

The biggest thing is timing...which is what you were getting at aunt betty. It's funny to see guys wail at them when they are 20 yards backflapping over the decoys

I flew rc airplanes. The trainer flew itself but I had to turn it and manage the power.
Landing ducks is incredibly like landing a plane. You have to work the wind and tell them to turn at the right time. The idea is to gently turn them at the right times. Gettem into the right zone and reel em in.

Tell them to turn at the wrong time and you mess it all up making it impossibke for them to land WHERE YOU ARE TRYING TO STEER THEM TO. Timing and not calling at the right times is far more important than which call or how good a caller you are.
