Do I need to have a special tool to make a dent in for the top reed that overlaps the bottom reed on a double? I want to replace the reeds in my double and have 2 sets of spares but neither have punches in them... jw if I can do this myself or do I have to send it back to the shop to get it done. My reeds are shot.
You can use anything with a point. Just be careful that the point is not too sharp and apply only enough force to make a dimple. You can use a ball point pen, dull nail, etc.
A really big point ballpoint pen works, just don't punch it hard enough to tear the mylar. Doesn't take much pressure. Do it over a soft wood surface, like a 2x4.
Just like the other guys suggested, I use a finishing nail that I ground the point completely off of. It is a rounded smooth tip and works better than a pen since it is a little larger diameter. Less torn reed dimples.
I use the firing pin from one of my bolt action rifles. Makes nice round dimples.
