I have rarely seen a wood duck turn to a call. They usually just dump into the decoys or zip by because they have a place to go. I've got a call on my lanyard, but I can do without it.

You can get an awesome wood duck call for $10. Why not put one on your landyard?

I've not carried a "wood duck" call in years but have had pretty good luck turning and tolling them (ie: some of them) with long, drawn out "sweeeet"s (not the shorter, more rapid, wavering whistle they do while flying) on either a Haydel's MP-90 6-in-1 type whistle or speck call.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

I usually just grab my Daisy Cutter and make a loud squeak. Its not perfect but 75% of the time they could give 2 craps what you sound like, they have their minds made up. I can't really explain how I do it, but it will turn them sometimes. I had one on my lanyard a while back and they really don't do much other than set you back another $15.

From what I have seen in calling wood ducks is that most folks run the flying call not the sitting call. Kelly makes a good wood duck call and as bad as I hate to say it but the Duck Commander's wood duck call is good to. Granted one is a JC reed and the other is a Mylar reed. Each has its own sound. The key is the correct air and the right sounds. I have turned more with the sitting call than the flying call.

PBS has Duckumentary on the wood duck that is pretty good. It does make you want to fall asleep at points but use it as a tool for the calls that the ducks make.

Here is the link.

Kick the water before daylight. They can't resist that.
