Cutdown Chatter/Feed

Postby KyMike » Wed Dec 04, 2013 9:54 am

I took the leap to cutdowns this year. So far so good. We had a group hunting the same slough as us last week and were able to pull almost all the ducks to us.

Right now I'm just doing the basic quacks and cut feed. I would like to learn another feed. I've heard the fast feed some people call it the helicopter feed. I've been working on it but cannot get it to sound right.

Anyone have a good description of how to do it? Any sound files of this feed that you could post? It's in some videos on YouTube but only very short segments.

Thanks for the response. I can do the rolling/comp j-frame feed. But there is a different feed that I've only heard on cutdowns. If you listen to some of the call war videos you will here it some. It just sounds different than a cut or comp feed. KM does it a lot in his videos. It's a very fast bouncing chatter. Can't describe very well I guess

Kirk does a super fast cut feed with short bursts of a roll mixed in there.

ta-ta-ta-ta-ta....ta-ta-ta, like you're trying to get a piece of tobacco off the tip of your tongue. It's not easy and it is easy to lock a call up doing it but it is effective on ducks.

Bryce, that is it, at the :38 and 1:00 mark. Your right about locking up the call. That is what I'm having problems with. Ill get a few notes then lock it. Ill just keep practicing.

At the 1:10 you do a short kind of roll feed. It that a rolling feed like a comp feed or a flutter of your tongue like a diver call?

Thanks for your help.

It's a cutting feed, just sounds different on a cutdown.

What applies to the Cut Down does not apply to a Rich-n-Tone call. It's more of a gu-gu--guh or ca-ca-cah whereas the olt is
ta-ta-tah or tu-tu-tuh. Cupping and un-cupping insert is key for me on my Daisy Cutter but not a must on my modified Olt. Your mileage may vary.

Great info guys. The cutdown cadence sounds different to me. It's longer and repetitive compared to the jframe cut is broken up and in different pitches to sound like different ducks. That's just what I hear.

It is wrote in stone somewhere that any thread that contains the word "cutdown" here on DHC in is destined to go south.

As cutdown threads go, this one's gone about as far south as Manitoba. Pretty disappointing.

Only because on a regular call you can get the different pitches. On a cut down if you open your hand or give the call more air(ways of changing pitch on a regular call) it doesn't change pitch, just gets louder. That is the reason it sounds different even though the presentation isn't.
