RNT SB Disassembly help needed

Postby Padre » Fri Jan 10, 2014 10:58 pm

I mentioned in my (only) other post here that I'd picked up an RNT SB in Cocobolo at a sweet price. I've been playing around with it some, to see what I could or couldn't do. Having fun, but I'm not sure I'm getting anything like the right sound or not. That's not what this post is about, though.

I've tried taking it apart like you're supposed to after a trip, so it can dry properly, but I cannot get it apart. I've tried pulling, twisting, tapping around the band or on the insert. It will not budge. Part of me wonders if it was put together while the varnish was still wet. I emailed RNT's general mailbox but haven't heard back yet. I'm sure they'll get to me but thought while I was waiting I'd ask here for help.

Thanks!

You might try putting it in the freezer for a bit.

The freezer trick should work, might take a couple tries. If not there is one other trick you can try.
Hold call barrel in one hand and the insert in the other, thumb to thumb, much like you are trying to snap a twig in half.Work gently with pressure up and down to see if the action will loosen it up enough to get it apart.
Here is a photo sequence that might be of some help.
I've had to use both methods, but luckily the last one but just once and it worked very well.

Thanks, guys. How long in the freezer? Had it in for maybe 15-20 minutes this morning before I left for work - no joy. I'll try it again when I get home.
